Paleozoic Carbonate Reservoirs

Puebla de Lillo mounds (Spain)

This 3-day course introduces the Upper Paleozoic carbonate reservoir, and gives insight into the deposition processes,  the platform evolution and sedimentary bodies related to reservoir development; the course also includes references to giant fields (Tengiz, Kashagan, Karachaganak, Kairan in Kazakhstan) supported by outcrop examination and presentations.

This course is designed to review, in the field, the depositional and burial history of the Pennsylvanian carbonates, and to give insights into the types of deposits and the geometry and petrophysical characteristics of the carbonate reservoirs, at field scale, with reference to the giant producing fields in Kazakhstan.

The course alternates lectures, exercises, and field studies about karst reservoirs identification and characterization.

Each participant is required to provide a yearly medical certificate before attending this field course. Participants must be in good health and physical conditions to attend.

Introduction to local geology context and isolated carboniferous giant productive fields of Kashagan and Tengiz.

Introduction to Mud Mounds and microbially dominated slope, with the examples of the Karachaganak and Kairan fields.
