Highlights:
This course covers all the main disciplines needed to perform efficiently the Well Site Geology activity. It adresses two domains which are of key value: drilling adequacy to the prognosed geological objectives and drilling overall safety.
Main Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, attendees are expected to understand and being able to practice in their daily activity:
Practical Mud-Logging
Pressure reminder & Calculations
Gas safety and Gas interpretation
Well Safety and Reservoir identification
LWD & Geo-steering
Reservoir and formation fluids
Basic of Electrical logging
Quick look analysis
Any participant will feel confident in detecting overpressure and safety related issue, in detecting reservoir and interpreting fluid content and porosity.
He will be able, also to understand and explain to the company man, the meaning of gas reading on surface, a topic usually not covered by other WSG trainings. At last, but not least, each participant will be deeply aware of his responsibility as operational geologist, either in terms of technical efficiency, or HSE requirements.
Learning Approach:
This course is based on interactive pedagogy and relies as much as possible on common sense (and not only on computer software applications…). Numerous exercises based on real case studies will be interpreted, both individually and collectively. Each phase (module) of the training is concluded by a QUIZ. It allows each participant to evaluate his progresses. This course is available in French, English and Spanish (with English documentation).
HSE Requirements:
There is no specific requirement for this course. It should be organised in any meeting room with common HSE characteristics, in your company premises or elsewhere.
Course Agenda:
Module 1: Practical Mud-Logging (1,5 days)
Well site geologist responsibility Samples description Basic hydrocarbons gas reading Dangerous gases
Module 2: Well Safety and Reservoir identification (3,5 days)
Pressure reminder Gas safety – understanding and interpreting Well behavior understanding Mud logging parameters Interpreting well behavior with real cases
Module 3: LWD & Geo-steering (2,5 days)
Productive wells Trajectory and limitations Tools and bottom hole assemblies TVD versus inclination and DIP – Real reservoir thickness Mechanical limitations Trajectory uncertainties Landing phase Drain drilling issues
Module 4: Reservoir and formation fluids (0,5 days)
Module 5: Basic of Electrical logging (1 day)
Module 6: Quick look analysis and Final Quiz (1 day)
Prerequisites
With the constant evolution of tools, software and the field application of new technologies, the Well Site Geology activity has change dramatically over the last years. Consequently the Well Site Geologist has to be properly trained to be able to propose a real added value on the drilling rig site.
Lecturers
VIOT A.
Alain has more than 30 years of experience in the Oil industry. He has worked as Data Engineer, Well Site Geologist, Operation Geologist and Production Geologist. During the last ten years, he has been a teacher in charge of various Well Site Geology courses, including on site individual coaching. He has developed a well appreciated tailor-made approach, for various companies such as TOTAL, ENI, HYPERGAS. More recently, he has been thoroughly involved in the development of a technical Certification process, designed for well site and operation geologists, in cooperation with TOTAL and IFP training.
