RESERVOIR CHARACTERIZATION & MODELING

This training course is designed for Junior Geoscientists, Experimented geologists or Reservoir Engineers interested by understand key steps in reservoir characterization and modeling.
Designed for 6 to 12 participants who would like to:

• Develop good practices in reservoir characterization and modeling.
• Good understanding in data integration and workflows.
• Capture the link between sedimentology, geostatistics and petrophysics.
• Adapt technics/workflows with project characteristics.
   

Acquire an understanding of the principles of multidisciplinary data integration, the development of geological concepts as well as the methods and tools necessary to build a geological model. The training uses an emblematic case study which serves as a common thread to lead the study from the loading of data to the uncertainty analysis.

Secondary objectives:

Depending on participant’s profile (and their objectives) this training can be broken down into:

• Two days dedicated to the construction of the architecture of the geological reservoir.
• Two days dedicated to the characterization study and modeling of geological phenomena affecting the reservoir.
• 1 day of finalization and use of the final geological model directed towards decision-making.

At the end of the different sequences, learners will be able to:

• Understand the various objectives and limitations of the geological model.
• Create a model from A to Z by following the key integration steps.
• Validate quality control procedures to ensure the robustness of the geological model.
• Identify uncertainties and their impacts on model performance.
• Build an adapted approach.

• Upstream preparation of the training to adapt to the level via a questionnaire on the experience of the participants.
• Implementation of a "learning by doing" process where the participant builds his own reasoning and validates his approach himself.
• A formal and playful pedagogy to integrate the theoretical contents. A pragmatic pedagogy (exercises, scenario,) and promoting sharing (work in sub-groups to promote exchanges and the emergence of a common culture).

Validation of learning

We verify that the objectives of this training are achieved through the following methods:

Before the training:

• An auto-evaluation by each participant about their estimated level/exposure to reservoir modeling and their expectations about training content/level.
• A pre-test of 25 questions on the 5 critical disciplines involved in the creation of the geological model. A precise knowledge mapping by discipline/by participant is delivered to quantify the level of each participant.

During the training:

• Each theme introduced is the subject of:
  • A reminder of fundamentals (<1h).
  • Hand-on practice exercises to apply the fundamentals, capture the critical elements of reservoir characterization.
  • Implementation of the geological model using dedicated software.
• Techhnical notes specific to each key topic are used as "reminders" at the start of each day to validate the previous day's achievements.

After the training:

• Post-test in a similar format as the "pre-test", on the same themes but with more advanced or reformulated questions to quantify progress and learning during the training.

Distribution of documents containing all the technical notes, but also more advanced scientific publications written or co-written by the trainer.
