Why should you attend?
The class will give geophysicists and geologists involved in HC potential evaluation a complete picture of what is interpretation, the strength and the limits, shortcuts and tricks. Geoscientists will boost their comprehension and skills in 2D/3D seismic-structural interpretation techniques, from basin play analysis to target identification, ranking, prospect generation and risk evaluation. Beside the interpretation, the course will provide as well fundamentals of Petroleum System concept and Play Risk analysis, enabling participants to become proficient on the job and to deliver the respective section objectives.
Main Objectives:
Recap on rock physics fundamentals
Fundamentals of seismic acquisition and processing
2D and 3D seismic interpretation on data – picking, posting, contouring, mapping, target identification
Time-to-depth conversion
Seismic stratigraphic fundamentals and seismic attributes (amplitudes, coherency, AVO etc.)
Sharing knowledge and experience
Learning Approach:
Attendants will learn through live course, with hand-on practical exercises and a booklet. Participants will work on their own, in couple or in group, according to the exercises. As software platforms are not available in that course, participants will run interpretation, mapping and other exercices on paper, together with the help and support of the teacher. Results will be checked at the end of each day and shared among students, to facilitate knowledge sharing. All documents are provided.
HSE requirements:
No specific requirement for this course that can take place in any meeting room with validated HSE characteristics, in your company premises or elsewhere.
Course Agenda:
Five days (35-40 hours) is the ideal time. The course can be shortened or lengthened according to the request.
Day 1:
Introduction to seismic Interpretation
Fundamentals of Rock Physics
Seismic data Acquisition
Fundamentals of Seismic Data Processing
Day 2:
The Link Between Seismic & Well
2D Seismic Interpretation

Day 3:
3D seismic data interpretation, mapping and contouring
Real case exercise from seismic picking to map generation and target identification
Day 4:
Time-to-depth conversion
Exercises
Day 5:
Fundamentals of seismic stratigraphy
Exercises
Introduction to seismic attributes
Prerequisites
The course is designed for young or advanced geoscientists (geologists, geophysicists and reservoir engineers) involved in exploration and development projects, willing to learn or reinforce their knowledge and skills in 2D/3D seismic structural interpretation. The class will update participants about fundamentals of geophysics, seismic acquisition and processing technics, and will focus on 2D/3D seismic interpretation, time to depth conversion, fundamentals of seismic stratigraphy and seismic attributes.
Project/Team leaders and asset coordinators who want to better interact with geoscience team members and, in general, want to ensure the most correct way to evaluate their licence/field potential.
A number of practical exercises based on real case histories will help consolidating the matter.
Lecturers
CASTELLANO P.
Geoscientist with 30 years' experience in oil and gas exploration/development in major oil companies: ENI, Gaz-De-France, ENGIE, Neptune Energy.
Throughout these decades he was multi-disciplinary team and project leader, peer review team leader, company's key expert, chief geologist and Technical Authority for exploration geology.
He is also teacher, mentor and coach of young geoscientists, via pedagogical-educational courses and training-on-the-job activity, leading teams by doing, with technical expertise gained over the years.
His core technical background is 2D/3D seismic/structural interpretation and mapping, prospect generation and assessment, from regional play evaluation to target identification, ranking, Play Risk analysis, HIIP volumes evaluation, well location and proposal. He got a strong experience in New Venture analysis and regional or block size assessments for licensing rounds.
Piero has worked in several Countries, regions and basins throughout the world: North Sea (UK, Norway, Hollande, Germany), offshore Poland, Italy, France, Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Malta, Azerbaijan, Mauritania, Ivory Coast, Qatar, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, Brazil.
